As of August 18 1997, users of the Firestone Library "Bring Your Own Computer" (BYOC) Facility will need to use DHCP to obtain their IP configuration. It will no longer be possible to use BootP to obtain an IP configuration in this facility.
The Firestone Library BYOC facility, located in 16 open carrels along the atrium on C floor, allows customers to attach their own portable computers to the campus network. This provides a form of mobile computing.
If you do not use the BYOC facility in Firestone Library, this change does not affect you. If you do use that facility and your computer already relies on DHCP to obtain its IP configuration, this change also does not affect you.
If you are affected by this change, and your computer is running operating system and networking software currently recommended by CIT, you can reconfigure your computer to use DHCP, so it will continue to function in the BYOC facility; the CIT Help Desk can provide instructions. If your computer is running older software that does not support DHCP, you may wish to upgrade to more current software; the CIT Help Desk can provide advice.
BootP service in the BYOC facility was originally provided in addition to DHCP service to allow customers who had not yet switched to DHCP to begin using that facility. Since then, more customers' computers are able to use DHCP. Dropping BootP support in the BYOC facility is necessary to allow expansion of mobile IP service throughout the rest of Firestone Library.
