Host Database Field: ACCOUNT-NUMBER

[This document describes a field in the Princeton University Host Database. You may also view descriptions of other fields.]

(This field is not used for Host Database entries corresponding to a Dormnet Subscription, or a Remote Access Personal IP Address; they always have a blank Account Number.)

The ACCOUNT-NUMBER field is used to indicate which account should be billed for any TigerNet Host Charge associated with this device. This field is required, even if the charge is waived (information about waived charges appears below).

Kinds of Account Numbers

There are several kinds of account numbers:

Traditional University Account Numbers
Traditional University Account Numbers are 7 digits with a hyphen between the third and fourth digit: ddd-dddd. These seven-digit numbers are also called "project grant numbers."

Only account numbers (project grant numbers) that are currently valid and active according to the University Controller's Office will be accepted. (The Host Database relies on the Project Grants table in the University's Data Mall to verify these values.)

The last four digits cannot be in the range 1050 through 1059.

The last four digits also cannot be in the range 8000-8999 (capital equipment).

Some departments and organizations specify account numbers which draw from central University networking funds, rather than their own budget. Others specify account numbers which draw from their own budget.

New-Style University Account Numbers
New-Style University Account Numbers are 10-digits: dddddddddd.

These are not yet supported in the Host Database; you cannot specify them.

University ID Numbers
University ID Numbers are 9-digits: ddddddddd. (The University ID for each person is displayed by the Campus Directory as a field called Alias.)

A University ID Number isn't really an account number; it is a unique identifier assigned by the University to each person or organization. You can specify a University ID Number when you need the charge to be billed to someone personally, rather than to a University account.

You may only specify a University ID Number associated with a currently-enrolled undergraduate student or graduate student. We cannot accept a University ID Number associated with anyone else (e.g. a faculty or staff member, a casual employee, an organziation, a post-enrolled graduate student, a special student, etc). (Our ability to bill the Tigernet Host Charge to a University ID Number relies on the University's Student Billing system, so we may accept only University ID Numbers of currently-enrolled undergraduate and graduate students.)

The University ID Number must be one that has both a netid and a preferred email address associated with it.

The University ID Number must be associated with the netid you used to login to the Host Database Web server. (A small number of OIT staff are authorized to specify arbitrary University ID Numbers; these Host Database Trusted Parties are OIT staff members who are sometimes responsible for acting on behalf of customers.)

The Tigernet Host Charging Algorithm

The current rate schedule for Tigernet Host Charges appears in this OIT announcement.

The ACCOUNT-NUMBER field is charged the TigerNet Host Charge. This charge is assessed for every entry registered in the Host Database.

The TigerNet Host Charge reflects network infrastructural costs, such as Internet fees, backbone maintenance, routers, etc.

As described in The TigerNet Host Charge, the charge is waived for certain Host Database entries, including those corresponding to the network's own infrastructure, printers and plotters, and dynamic IP addresses. A Host Database entry is determined to be one of these waived types based on the ENTRY-TYPE, so it is important you specify an accurate ENTRY-TYPE; OIT may audit this information periodically. Even if the TigerNet Host Charge will be waived for a specific Host Database entry, you must still specify an ACCOUNT-NUMBER; this is to cause Financial Contacts to be associated with the entry, and also to allow for billing if policies should change in the future.

As described in The TigerNet Host Charge, the charge is waived if a device is attached to privately-maintained (e.g. departmental) wiring and it is not possible to communicate in any way with the device from any other device attached to OIT wiring. (This typically requires installation of filtering hardware between the private wiring and OIT wiring to block the traffic from/to the device.) In this case, the device must still be registered with an ACCOUNT-NUMBER, but the number should be of the form ddd-9999, where ddd is the department's three-digit number. This special suffix is used to indicate (to the Host Database) the non-charged status. OIT may audit this information periodically, and may require written confirmation from the department manager that the device is filtered.

As described in The TigerNet Host Charge, the charge is waived if the ACCOUNT-NUMBER is a University ID number belonging to a currently-enrolled undergraduate or graduate student. OIT may audit this information periodically, to ensure that the value specified is indeed still a valid University ID number, and that it belongs to a currently-enrolled undergraduate or graduate student.

The ACCOUNT-NUMBER specified for a Host Database entry determines the Financial Contacts that are associated with the Host Database entry. Each University Account Number may have Financial Contacts associated with it; they are the people with fiduciary responsibility for that University Account. For Traditional University Account Numbers, the Financial Contacts List is based upon data from University financial records (it is not actually part of the Host Database); only an ACCOUNT-NUMBER is stored in each Host Database entry. Of course, if the ACCOUNT-NUMBER represents central University networking funds instead of departmental funds, the Financial Contacts will be unrelated to the department. (If the Account Number specified is a University ID Number, the Financial Contacts are simply the netid(s) associated with the University ID Number, as reported by the Campus Directory.) The Financial Contacts associated with a Host Database entry may change or delete the entry. They also receive email notification any time a Host Database entry is added or deleted, or when an entry is changed in such a way as to affect its billing status.

Dormnet Subscriptions

For Host Database entries associated with Dormnet subscriptions, the ACCOUNT-NUMBER field is not used. (Dormnet entries are those in which the ENTRY-NAME and DNS-DOMAIN form a fully-qualified name of the form netid.student.Princeton.EDU.)

There is no fee associated with Dormnet subscriptions.

Remote Access Personal IP Addresses

For Host Database entries associated with Remote Access Personal IP Addresses the ACCOUNT-NUMBER field is not used. (These are the entries in which the ENTRY-TYPE is REMOTE-ACCESS-PERSONAL-IP-ADDRESS.)

There is no charge for a Remote Access Personal IP Address. (However, usage of OIT's Remote Access Services is subject to its own charges, regardless of whether it involves a Remote Access Personal IP address; Remote Access Services: Billing .
