OIT recommends that all Macs connected to the campus network via OIT Ethernet wiring be configured so they use DHCP. All Macs connected via OIT Wireless Networking Service must be configured so they use DHCP.
DHCP is a network service that allows the Mac to automatically learn various network parameters. The parameters learned include the IP address, subnet mask, and default router, domain name servers, and domain name. In Mac OS X, configuration is done in the Network pane of System Preferences.
If your Mac is connected to a non-OIT network that does not provide DHCP service, or you are aware of some other special reason that DHCP is not appropriate for your Mac, you may choose to configure your Mac to not use DHCP.
DHCP service only works if your Mac is registered properly in the Princeton University Host Database. As with all devices connected to OIT Ethernet or Wireless service, if you replace your Mac or its Ethernet or Wireless interface, you must update your entry in the Host Database. Replacing your Mac or its Ethernet or Wireless interface will normally change its Ethernet or Wireless hardware address; DHCP service will not work until your Host Database entry is updated to reflect your Mac's new Ethernet or Wireless hardware address.
