OIT Ethernet Service OIT Ethernet Service allows University faculty, staff, and students to connect devices to the campus data network via an Ethernet interface. The service is available in practically every building on campus. Global Internet Service An overview of the campus network's connections to the global Internet. The TigerNet Host Charge Most devices attached to the campus data network are subject to the TigerNet Host Charge; the charge is based upon Host Database records. Dormnet subscriptions are not subject to the TigerNet Host Charge (Dormnet uses a separate subscription fee). The TigerNet Host Charge is waived for network infrastructure, printers, and some other special kinds of devices. Networking Charges A summary of monthly network connection charges for office and classrooms connections; this document is published by OIT Administrative Services. Princeton Network ("subnet") List How to determine what campus subnet a device is attached to, based on the geographic location. (You may also use this document to determine the subnet's IP network number, IP subnet mask, and IP default router; most people won't need that level of detailed information.) Default IP Routers, Network Masks, and Broadcast Addresses How to determine a computer's default IP router (a.k.a "gateway"), network mask (a.k.a. "netmask"), and broadcast address, based on the computer's assigned IP address. OIT DHCP and BootP Services DHCP (the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) and BootP (Boot Protocol) allow a network-attached device to learn some of its network configuration information (including its IP address) automatically. DHCP is also used to provide OIT Mobile IP Service, Temporary Unregistered Dormnet (TUD) IP Address Service, Visitor IP (VIP) Service, and Temporary Visitor Wireless Network Access (TVWNA). OIT Static IP Service OIT Static IP Service provides a static (unchanging) IP address and DNS hostname to your computer when it is attached to OIT Ethernet wiring on its "home network." OIT Static IP Recycling Facility (SIRF) The OIT Static IP Recycling Facility (SIRF) locates OIT Static IP Addresses that have been unused for a long time; it recycles these addreses to help conserve them. OIT Mobile IP Service OIT Mobile IP Services let you temporarily attach your computer to the campus network in locations other than your "home" location and still receive IP service without reconfiguring your computer or updating its Host Database entry. OIT Domain Name Service A description of the Domain Name Service we provide. Domain Name Service (DNS) provides access to the Internet's distributed database, often used to translate between domain names (e.g. foobar.Princeton.EDU) and IP addresses (e.g. 128.112.252.7). How to Determine Your Ethernet or Wireless Hardware Address Instructions for determing the Ethernet or Wireless hardware address on some common platforms. Identify My Computer A tool to display the Princeton University Host Database entry corresponding to the IP address your computer is currently using. DNS Lookup A tool to lookup a hostname or IP address in the Internet's Domain Name System. (This is not the same as looking up an entry in the Princeton University Host Database.) The tool is only available to on-campus clients. Temporary Unregistered Dormnet (TUD) IP Address Service TUD Service allows devices attached to the Dormnet network but not currently subscribed to Dormnet to have some limited access to campus network. This service is provided for the sole purpose of allowing students to submit Dormnet Subscription forms from their own computers before those computers are receiving normal Dormnet service (because they are not yet subscribed to Dormnet). Temporary Visitor Wireless Network Access (TVWNA) Temporary Visitor Wireless Network Access (TVWNA) provides short-term Internet connectivity to wireless devices brought by visitors to Princeton University. Wireless service is available in select campus locations. Visitor IP (VIP) Service Visitor IP Service provides Internet service to devices not registered in the Host Database when they are attached via Ethernet to the guestnet network in the guest rooms of Palmer House. (The service is not designed for use outside Palmer House.) Network Time Protocol (NTP) Service A description of the Network Time Protocol (NTP) Service we provide. The Network Time Protocol allows network-attached computing devices to synchronize their time/date clocks automatically. Virtual Private Network Services OIT provides a Virtual Private Network (VPN) Service for clients that support Microsoft PPTP-based VPNs. VPN service provides a degree of security for traffic crossing the network. It also provides a temporary Princeton University presence, and a temporary Princeton University IP address and hostname to a VPN client, even if the client is connected via the Internet outside the University. Connecting a Private Ethernet Repeater, Bridge, or Switch to the Campus Network Describes issues specific to connecting a private repeater, bridge, or switch to the campus network. Included are caveats and appropriate Host Database registration procedures. Connecting to the Campus Network via NAS DSL (a.k.a DSL.net) Service An overview of using NAS DSL service, a commercial service that provided high-speed connectivity at home via a connection to the campus network. (In effect, it extended the campus network to your home.) Included are special considerations, and instructions about Host Database registrations. (As of Spring 2002, additional connections to the campus network using NAS DSL service are no longer available.
