Network Monitoring

-----

OIT Network Systems uses a number of systems to monitor the campus data network.
Rover: The Network Status Monitor
We monitor the campus network with a package called Rover. Key components of the IP network are monitored. You can watch the IP Rover display in realtime, or review the event logs.

Statistics
Statistics we collect include traffic volume flowing through the network infrastructure. Other statistics may include modems in-use, CPU usage of key infrastructural components, and some data provided by hosts attached to the network.

ARP Bomber
The ARP Bomber monitors the pu-dormnet-bb network (a.k.a. "Dormnet"), detecting devices with hardware addresses not registered in the Host Database, as well as some cases of devices using inappropriate IP addresses. It attempts to deny IP service to those devices.

Traceroute
Use this to trace the current path from www.net.princeton.edu to another Internet host you specify.

OIT Help Desk
Current and upcoming scheduled network outages are listed on the OIT Help Desk's home page. Any current unscheduled outages are also listed there when it is feasible to do so.

Tivoli Monitoring
Monitoring of system performance and health indicators on hosts is provided using Tivoli Monitoring software; the service is provided by OIT Enterprise Systems Management group.
