On April 16 1996, the MTU value ("maximum transmission unit") on the Campus SLIP and PPP Server will be changed from 1006 bytes to 1500 bytes.
If you are already using SLIP or PPP service, you may need to reconfigure your software. Information about specific platforms appears below. SLIP or PPP software installed new on or after April 16 1996 should be configured to use an MTU of 1500 from the outset.
We have tested the recommended SLIP and PPP networking software.
If your Mac does not run Open Transport software, then you do not need to reconfigure your software; it will continue to function. However, to avoid possible future problems, we recommend that you still reconfigure your software on or after April 16 1996, to use the new MTU.
If your Mac does run Open Transport software, then you must reconfigure your software to use the new MTU on or after April 16 1996.
For instructions, see Changing MacSLIP's MTU from 1006 to 1500.
We have tested the recommended SLIP and PPP networking software for MS-DOS, Windows 3.1, and Windows 95.
You do not need to reconfigure your software; it will continue to function.
If your UNIX system uses SLIP, you will need to reconfigure it on or after April 16 1996. For SunOS and IRIX systems, the MRU ("Maximum Receive Unit") value in your system will have to be changed to 1500. Because there is no "standard" SLIP for SunOS and IRIX systems, it is not obvious where this value will be located on your system. If you need assistance locating this value on your system, please send email to cithelp@princeton.edu.
If your UNIX system uses PPP, you will not need to reconfigure it; it
will continue to function. However, to help you avoid any possible
future problems, we do recommend that on or after April 16 1996, you
re-configure your PPP software to use the new MTU value of 1500. On an
SGI, edit the file /etc/ppp.conf; locate the line that looks like
mtu=XXX (where XXX is a number), and change the number to 1500. On a
Solaris system, edit the file /etc/asppp.cf; locate the line that
looks like lcp_mru=XXX (where XXX is a number), and change the number
to 1500.
If you are using a different platform, or SLIP or PPP software other than the versions CIT has recommended, you may find that it stops working correctly on April 16 1996, and that you need to reconfigure its MTU value at that time. (If the package only supports an MTU of 1006 and not 1500, you may need to switch to another SLIP or PPP package.)
