Effective April 23 1996, you no longer need to register for a Remote Access Account to use CIT's Remote Access Services. You need only a valid CIT UNIX netid (a.k.a. userid) and password.

Remote Access accounts have not been needed for some time to use the Non-Charged service (258-0430), a small group of dial-in lines appropriate if you had only modest remote access needs (less than 15 minutes per day).

Until April 23 1996, you needed to register for a Remote Access Account to use the Charged service (258-2710), our main group of dial-in lines. This was because we needed to know to where your usage should be billed, and what charging method you preferred, and we used to assign personal IP addresses to anyone needing to use IP. Starting April 23, we have arranged for your billing destination and charging method based on various defaults, described below. If the defaults are not appropriate for you, you may change them. (If you had previously registered for a Remote Access Account, we will continue to use the billing information you provided.) As announced earlier, we no longer assign personal IP addresses to Remote Access accounts under normal circumstances.

The old procedure of sending email to remote@princeton.edu to register for a Remote Access Account has been discontinued, since Remote Access accounts are no longer needed under normal circumstances.

What Charging Methods Will Be Used?

As in the past, if you use the Non-Charged service (by dialing into 258-0430), you are not charged (hence the name). You are expected to limit your use of Non-Charged service to no more than fifteen minutes per day.

As in the past, if you use the Charged service (by dialing into 258-2710), you will be billed for your use of the service. Charging methods and rates have not changed; both the "Standard" and "Bulk" charging methods remain the same.

By default we will assume you want the "Standard" charging method. If you are a student, by default your charges will be billed to your student account (i.e. regular University billing). If you are a faculty or staff member, by default your charges will be billed to the same University account that pays for your University telephone. Other billing options for faculty, staff, and students include specifying another University account, or a major credit card.

You may change your charging method (between Standard and Bulk), or billing destination (among a student account, specify a University account, or a major credit card). To change either, use this form.

As noted above, if you had registered for a "Remote Access Account" in the past, the charging method and billing destination you specified at that time will still be used.
