Remote Access: V.90 Service is Available

CIT Network Systems
December 8, 1998

CIT's Charged Remote Access Service (phone 806-1000) has been upgraded to add support for the V.90 standard. V.90 is a protocol standard that allows modem dial-in speeds up to 56,000 bits per second in the downlink direction (uplink speeds remain limited to 33,600 bits per second).

The Charged Remote Access Service continues to support all the older protocols it previously supported. (In particular, it continues to support K56Flex version 1.1 at this time; K56Flex is a predecessor to the V.90 standard, and provided similar speeds.) Customers using older modems that do not support V.90 may continue to dial-in as before.

We suggest that customers using modems that are software-upgradeable to V.90 proceed to upgrade their modems. (Vendors of modems designed to be software-upgraded to V.90 typically make these upgrades freely downloadable from their Web sites.)

In particular, we suggest upgrading K56Flex or x2 modems to V.90 (if they were designed to be upgraded). For customers using modems that already support V.90, we suggest that you check to see if your modem vendor has released any software updates for your modem; some vendors have released updates that will improve their modems' V.90 performance or reliability.

CIT's Non-Charged Remote Access Service (phone 258-0430) continues to provide a maximum speed of 33,600 bits per second (the V.34bis protocol standard); there are no plans at this time to upgrade the non-charged service to provide V.90 service.
