How to Swap the Ethernet and Wireless Hardware Addresses Within a Host Database Entry

Sometimes a customer registering a device in the Host Database will accidentally swap the Ethernet and Wireless hardware addresses in a single Host Database entry.

That is, the customer accidentally specifies the device's Ethernet hardware address as the device's Wireless hardware address, and specifies the device's Wireless hardware address as the device's Ethernet hardware address.

The following procedures may be used to swap the two hardware addresses within the Host Database so they are correct.

For Dormnet Subscriptions

Follow these steps:

  1. Use the Host Database to change the entry to remove the (incorrect) value presently specified as the wireless hardware address. As the Web form indicates, enter NONE as in the field labelled Wireless Hardware Address to remove the value presently specified as the wireless hardware address.

Wait for your change request to be processed before proceeding; the next step is not possible until your change request has been successfully processed. Email is sent to the Host Database entry's Technical Contact (you, assuming you are the customer to whom the entry belongs) showing when your change request is successfully processed.

  2. Use the Host Database to change the entry to replace the (incorrect) value presently specified as the Ethernet hardware address with the correct value. As the Web form indicates, enter the correct Ethernet hardware address in the field labelled Ethernet Hardware Address to replace the value presently specified as the Ethernet hardware address.

Wait for your change request to be processed before proceeding; the next step is not possible until your change request has been successfully processed. Email is sent to the Host Database entry's Technical Contact (you, assuming you are the customer to whom the entry belongs) showing when your change request is successfully processed.

  3. Use the Host Database to change the entry to specify the correct Wireless hardware address.

Email is sent to the Host Database entry's Technical Contact (you, assuming you are the customer to whom the entry belongs) showing when your change request is successfully processed.

For Office Entries (i.e. all entries except Dormnet subscriptions)

These instructions will work for the most-common situation: the Host Database entry's first interface is registered as an Ethernet interface with an IP address on a network other than wirelessnet and a hardware address, the entry's second interface is registered as a Wireless interface with an IP address on wirelessnet and a hardware address, the entry contains no other IP addresses or hardware addresses. and you wish to swap the two hardware addresses. (If this does not describe your situation, you may need manual intervention by hostmaster instead; please send email to hostmaster@princeton.edu .)

Follow these steps:

  1. Use the Host Database to change the entry to delete the wireless interface containing the incorrect value. Use the Delete Wireless Interface button; it appears at the bottom of the Is this the entry in question? page of the form. (There is no need to delete the entire Host Database entry.)

Wait for your change request to be processed before proceeding; the next step is not possible until your change request has been successfully processed. Email is sent to the entry's Technical Contacts showing when your change request is successfully processed.

  2. Use the Host Database to change the entry to replace the (incorrect) value presently specified as the Ethernet address with the correct value.

On the Change an Entry in the Host Database page of the form, enter the correct Ethernet hardware address in the field labelled ENET-ADDRESS. This will replace the (incorrect) value presently specified as the (first) Ethernet hardware address. (Do not enter the Ethernet hardware address in the field labelled ADD-ENET-ADDRESS.)

Wait for your change request to be processed before proceeding; the next step is not possible until your change request has been successfully processed. Email is sent to the entry's Technical Contacts showing when your change request is successfully processed.

  3. Use the Host Database to change the entry to add the wireless interface. Use the Add Wireless Interface button; it appears at the bottom of the Is this the entry in question? page of the form. Enter the correct Wireless hardware address.

Email is sent to the entry's Technical Contacts showing when your change request is successfully processed.
